Maintenance
The maintenance process
So that you can wear a pre-owned watch with confidence, every watch goes through careful maintenance after it arrives. Here is the process behind our Premium Quality.

Step 01Arrival
Pre-owned watches reach us mainly through purchases from wholesalers, dealer auctions and purchases from private customers. We do not simply resell every watch we buy: only pieces that can meet our strict in-house quality standard after maintenance are offered for sale.

Step 02Checking operation, accuracy and exterior
We check how the watch runs and how accurate it is: crown operation and hand movement, the calendar changeover, chronograph, GMT and other functions, and the rate and balance amplitude on a timing machine. The exterior is examined just as closely, for scratches, dents and fading as well as misaligned or rusted hands, dial corrosion, chipped crystals and stretched bracelets.

Step 03Internal inspection
A watchmaker opens the case back with a dedicated opener and inspects the movement. "Inspection" covers many points: Are the wheels and parts clean and intact? Is there enough lubricant, and is it clean and not dried out? A movement is barely three centimetres across, and tiny parts such as jewels and pallet stones must all be examined, so this is where the watchmaker's skill shows. Any watch with an abnormality, insufficient lubricant or poor accuracy goes on to an overhaul. Quartz watches also have the battery replaced and the circuit's electrical characteristics and residual magnetism checked.

Step 04
Overhaul
Watches found to have a problem in the internal inspection are overhauled. An overhaul means disassembling the movement, cleaning it, applying fresh lubricant and reassembling it. Each precisely engineered part is taken apart, the small parts are pre-cleaned with a brush, and everything is rebuilt exactly as it was, with lubricant applied and without the slightest distortion or misalignment. An overhaul by a skilled watchmaker is essential for a watch to be enjoyed for many years to come; it breathes new life into the watch.

Step 05Exterior finishing (polishing)
Refinishing follows a fixed sequence: checking the scratches, disassembling the exterior, pre-cleaning, removing scratches, finish polishing, cleaning and reassembly. After the movement is removed and the bracelet, bezel, crystal and pushers taken off, the parts are cleaned ultrasonically. Coarse buffing removes the scratches, then each surface is polished according to its original finish, such as brushed or mirror. After a final ultrasonic cleaning and complete drying, the watch is reassembled and its water resistance tested. Parts that cannot be polished, such as a crystal with noticeable scratches, are replaced with new ones.

Step 06Final inspection
When all maintenance is complete, one step remains before Premium Quality: a strict final inspection before the watch goes on display. Operation, accuracy and exterior condition are checked once again, and for online customers we write a description of the maintenance carried out and the condition of any remaining marks.

Step 07Protective wrapping
Because the watch will be displayed in store, it is wrapped in a dedicated protective film so that it cannot be scratched. The film is extremely thin and applied without creases, so the watch's original form and texture are preserved.

Step 08In-store display
Only watches that have been through this careful maintenance, our Premium Quality, are passed on to the next owner. On display, too, they are handled with care by our professional staff.
